Daily Video — “Leaf Color Chromatography

Have you ever wondered why leaves change brilliant colors in the fall?  While most of us are just starting to really enjoy the greenery of spring for the first time, this is actually the perfect time to consider this question and conduct the experiment in today’s video.  You’ll learn about the different compounds that are present in plant leaves, both chlorophyll and carotenoids, and how they function.  Following this, follow the steps for a  simple at-home experiment to see these two compounds and the different amounts of each in different leaves.  Having brand new, fresh leaves makes this the perfect time of the year for this experiment!
