Here is a fun “then and now” photo, showing a Manhattan storefront in 1937 with the plethora of accompanying signage and distinctive architecture.  Today it is a very non-descript, generic Starbucks (See below) [GOOGLE MAPS]

It’s very interesting to see how little (and how much) trash truck technology has evolved in the past 70 years!

I love the details you can see in the products displayed here.  And imagine having this shop and all these goods on display when you think about what was happening in Europe at this exact moment in 1942!  It’s an absolute testament to the freedoms we’ve always enjoyed here in America.

Granted, this is showing a day in New York where it seems to be pouring out, but Times Square looks absolutely empty!  Compare this to what you might see there today.

The name Coney Island is synonymous with amusement parks and entertainment from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  This image of the Dreamland park shows Coney Island at its height — all of this pictured would be destroyed in a fire only 6 years later.  Compare the revelers here to those you might see in an amusement park or on a boardwalk today!  There is a great history of Dreamland here.
