I love the details you can see in the products displayed here.  And imagine having this shop and all these goods on display when you think about what was happening in Europe at this exact moment in 1942!  It’s an absolute testament to the freedoms we’ve always enjoyed here in America.

I love photos like these that are a snapshot of a place at a moment in time.  Even better, now that we have Google Maps and street view, we can see what they look like today and now much (or little) has changed.  In this case, much has changed as the building seems to be completely gone, but still the property is used in the same way (almost) as a Vitamin Shoppe.– via Google.

What’s also very interesting here is how the merchandise is displayed and advertised, as opposed to drug stores/pharmacies today where you see more insurance and vaccination information in the windows than product.

History of the Hottest Christmas Toys — Infographic

History of the Hottest Christmas Toys 1903-2010

Gift giving has always been a very important part of Christmas.  Granted, there are arguments today that the true meaning of giving and appreciation have really been lost recently to the commercialism of the holiday, but it remains nonetheless.  Since Christmas is generally centered around children (or our inner child) today’s infographic takes a look at the most popular toys over the 107 year span from 1903-2010.  Take a look at what the “must-have” gifts were over the years — we know there’s always one each year.  Speaking of which, anyone know where I can get my hands on a Hatchimal?!?.  [VIA]

The median family income in 1955 was about $4800 (adjusted for inflation, that’s about $42,500 today).  Using the same calculator, this $1000 doll would cost about $8900 — I think Santa would have been stretched a little thin in both cases!  I am captivated by the longing in the little girl’s eyes though.
