History of the Hottest Christmas Toys — Infographic

History of the Hottest Christmas Toys 1903-2010

Gift giving has always been a very important part of Christmas.  Granted, there are arguments today that the true meaning of giving and appreciation have really been lost recently to the commercialism of the holiday, but it remains nonetheless.  Since Christmas is generally centered around children (or our inner child) today’s infographic takes a look at the most popular toys over the 107 year span from 1903-2010.  Take a look at what the “must-have” gifts were over the years — we know there’s always one each year.  Speaking of which, anyone know where I can get my hands on a Hatchimal?!?.  [VIA]

The median family income in 1955 was about $4800 (adjusted for inflation, that’s about $42,500 today).  Using the same calculator, this $1000 doll would cost about $8900 — I think Santa would have been stretched a little thin in both cases!  I am captivated by the longing in the little girl’s eyes though.

1955. $1000 doll in lace dress in John Wanamaker, West Chester, lures little girl who eyes it in showcase. Original from Life Magazine, December 15, 1955.
